Many people know that being overweight is bad for health.
But recent research suggests that excess fat in the abdomen can cause more
dangerous things, that increase the risk of cancer and heart disease.
It is known to investigators after a CT scan of the
abdominal fat 3,000 Americans aged 50 and seven years. During the study there
were 90 cases of known heart disease, 141 cancer cases and 71 deaths.
Researchers then concluded that excess fat in the abdomen associated with high
risk of heart disease and cancer.
Results of this study may help to explain why people with a
BMI (body mass index) of the same features for different diseases associated
with obesity.
"In contrast to previous studies comparing BMI and
waist measurement, it seems fat on the belly can be used to predict the risk of
heart disease," says head researcher Dr. Caroline Fox from the U.S.
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Laboratory for Metabolic and
Population Health, as reported by by U.S. News (10/07).
Though the study found an association between excess fat in
the stomach and the risk of heart disease and cancer, but this study could not
show a causal link.
