A recent study revealed that playing video games with regard
to tactics and memorization can help a person think more flexibly. Flexible
thinking is associated with a person's ability to think of many things at one
time, or the ability to change focus quickly.
This discovery by researchers could be very useful in the
treatment of people suffering from brain injuries or who have ADHD. Previous
studies revealed that the action game genre can make people think and make
decisions faster.
"This study found that gaming genre and strategy and
tactics can help a person thinking while working as well faster change focus
while thinking," said Dr. Brian Glass from the School of Biological and
Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London, as reported by U.S. News
(23 / 08).
These results were found after researchers observed 72 women
who play video games are less than two hours a week. Most participants were
asked to play a strategy game called "StarCraft" while others were
asked to play the regular game "The Sims" which is not too much need
of tactics and strategy. Participants played this game for 40 hours in eight
weeks.
Investigators later found that participants, who played
StarCraft has the ability to think more flexibly, think faster and more
accurate, compared with participants who play The Sims. Glass argues that
flexible thinking skills can be learned by anyone through a fun way, like
playing games.
Flexible thinking skills will make a person more creative in
solving problems, more able to think outside the box, and enable them to think
many things at the same time.
