Levels of the hormone estrogen in the body appear to be related to the risk of death from sudden cardiac arrest, both men and women, according to recent research.
Death from sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. Each year more than 350,000 people in the U.S. die from sudden cardiac arrest.
Researchers looked at data from the Portland, Oregon, who had a heart attack or have heart disease. Tests performed on plasma taken at death showed that the group has in common in terms of heart disease risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
But besides that, the researchers also found lower levels of testosterone in men and estrogen levels are quite high in women in the group who had a heart attack compared to those who have coronary heart disease, as reported by U.S. News (10/05).
Researchers also found high levels of estrogen and low testosterone in men and women who died of a heart attack. However this study did not demonstrate a causal relationship between estrogen levels and sudden death from a heart attack.
This invention can be used to identify patients at risk of sudden death from heart disease, said Dr. Sumeet Chugh of the Heart Rhythm cebter at Cedars Sinai Heart Institute, Los Angeles.
