Adults who have high levels of mercury in their bodies
likely to have the risk of diabetes by up to 65 percent higher, according to a
study.
The first study linking the mercury levels with diabetes in
order to give warning people to limit consumption of fish. Because the study is
based on fish and seafood is the most widely contain mercury, as reported by
U.S. News (08/04).
Researchers found that nearly all fish and seafood contain
traces of mercury. Even so, fish and seafood also contain protein and essential
nutrients such as magnesium and omega-3, which can reduce the effects of
mercury.
The study looked at 3,900 men and women aged 20-32 years who
are free of diabetes from 1987 to 2005. Researchers measured levels of mercury
and diabetes testing. Researchers also calculated the risk caused by other
factors, such as lifestyle and diet.
Compared with other participants, people who have high
levels of mercury in their bodies have a more healthy lifestyle, having a
smaller waist circumference, and eat more fish. Even so, the researchers also
showed high levels of mercury lead to an increased risk of diabetes.
Based on these results, people should be more selective when
eating seafood. Should choose low-mercury seafood such as salmon, catfish, and
shrimp.
